Placed on this isthmus of a middle state,
A being darly wise, and rudely great;
With too much knowledge for the Sceptic's side,
With too much weekness for the Scoic's pride,
He hangs between; in doubt to act, or rest,
In doubt to deem himself a God, or beast,
In doubt his mind or body to prefer,
Born but to die, reasoning but to err.
In this argument, the author recommends a general use of ultrasound machines which are able to detect plaque in blood in order to make overall medical cost in Corpora decreasing. To support this claim, the author cited the relationship between artery walls thickening and the risk of stroke, and then made a forecasting over people’s reaction towards the detect results. This recommendation, while suggestive in surface, suffers from three flaws in reasoning. In the first place, the author makes an underlying assumption without evidence that plaque is the only reason for artery walls thickening, and moreover, stroke is solely caused by artery walls thickening. However, many other substances could result in artery thickening such as fat deposit, and additionally, other factors such as artery aging are as well the possible reason for stroke. Without ruling out these possibilities, the author cannot construct a solid relationship between the risk of stroke and the detection. Secondly, the author provides no statistical evidence about the credibility of this type of machine. Chances are that this technology is not well developed enough to reveal any significant amount of plaque that could lead to stroke, or that the rate of correct diagnosis is not high enough to place any reliability upon it. If so, the practicability of this detecting method is thus rendered high suspect. Thirdly, the conclusion that a probable decrease would take place due to early detection is based upon a questionable reasoning. Hardly had we been convinced that changing life-style would make no medical cost. For example, taking some chronic medicine regularly to ameliorate health condition, or supplying some appliance for health excising may need high expenses. On the other hand, the author commits a fallacy of ignorance in assuming that stroke is the only way of medical fee cost. In fact, a great many of other factors could make considerable influence upon medical costs, such as obesity, high blood pressure, heart disease and so on. The author’s failure in considering the effect of these factors renders his recommendation amount to poor advice. In sum, the author’s recommendation is not persuasive as it stands. To make it convincing, the author have to establish a general relationship between plaque and the risk of stroke, develop a deeper insight about the detecting machine, make a full investigation about Corpora’s medical expense cost. Only after these steps shall we accept the author’s point of view. |
